Accept = to receive

Except = leaving out, omit

Ex: I can speak all Nigeria languages except Hausa.

Beer = to endure, tolerate, a kind of animal.

Ex: I can't bear her cruelty.

Beer = a kind of wine

Ex: The doctor advised him to reduce alcohol intake.


12. Berth – Birth

Berth = a sleeping place in a train.

Ex: I reserved a berth in the train.

Birth = being born

Ex: I am a physically handicapped person from birth.


13. Blew – Blue

Blew = past tense of the verb blow.

Ex: She blew out the candle in the room.

Blue = a color

Ex: Bukola has blue eyes.


14. Born – Borne

Born = give birth

Ex: I was born in a poor family.

Borne = past participle of the verb bear.

Ex: it should be borne in mind that hard work brings success.

Brake = an appliances of lessening the speed of a vehicle.

Ex: I applied the brakes of the car.

Break = to make into pieces 

Ex: Don't break the camera.


16. Bridal – Bridle

Bridal = belonging to a bride.

Ex: Ummy looked beautiful in her bridal dress

Brindle = the head gear of a horse.

Ex: He controlled the bridle of the horse very skillfully.


17. By – Buy

By = a preposition

Ex: This book is written by me.

Buy: purchase

Ex: She wanted to buy a blue bag on her birthday.


18. Canvas – Canvass

Canvass = a cloth of hemp, flex or cotton.

Ex: My friend is an expert in painting on a canvas.

Canvass = to solicit or ask for votes.

Ex: Abdul is canvassing for the progressive party.


19. Check – Cheque

Check = to stop, to verify

Ex: The president tried to check corruption in the society.

The auditor checked the account of the company thoroughly.

Cheque = a bank slip for payment of money 

Ex: I received a cheque of five thousand Naira from the publisher.


20. Ceiling – Sealing

Ceiling = top surface of the room

Ex: The ceiling of our house is in deplorable condition.

Sealing = to stamp with seal

21. Complement – Compliments

Complement = a word which completes the meaning of a verb (In grammer) or that completes something. 

Ex: Love is a complement to life.

Some verbs in English require a complement.

Compliment = a word of praise.

Ex: Maryam thanked me for my compliment on her beauty.

Corporal = bodily, physically

Ex: Many countries have abolished corporal punishment.

Corporeal = material, tangible

Ex: It is very foolish to run after corporeal pleasures.

Credible = believable

Ex: She is a credible person.

Creditable = worthy of credit

Ex: Muba's contribution to imo State as a Governor is creditable.


24. Council – Counsel

Council = an assembly of persons.

Ex: The issue of Muba was discussed in the security council. 

Counsel = advice

Ex:  She ignored my wise counsel.


25. Course – Coarse

Course = path, progress, syllabus

Ex: We must follow the right course.

I wanted to study a computer course at college.

Coarse = rough

Ex: His shirt is made of a coarse cloth.


26. Dairy – Diary

Dairy = a place where milk and cream are processed or prepared.

Ex: We get milk from a dairy.

Diary = a book to note down daily record of events.

Ex: I usually write in my dairy at night.


27. Dam – Damn

Dam = an embankment or an irrigation project.

Ex: I visited the Kainji Dam last year.

Damn = condemn.

Ex: She must be demned for what she has done.


28. Dear – Deer

Dear = beloved

Fair = just, beautiful, a periodical market

Ex: There is fair distribution of wealth in Nigeria.

Fare = a price for transporting a passenger.

I paid the text fare.


31. Floor – Flour

Floor = ground, lower surface of the room.

Ex: The office is located at the ground floor.

Flour = the finely ground powder.

Ex: We make bread from wheat flour.


32. Former – Formal

Former = the first, earlier.

Ex: The former managing Director was one a popular film actor.

Formal = official

Ex: Your application letter to the manager should be formal.

Oar = an instrument used for rowing a boat.

Ex: He is rowing the boat with the help of an oar.

Ore = the mineral used from which metal can be extracted.

Ex: Iron can be extracted from ore by melting.


138. Ordinance – Ordnance

Ordinance = a rule made by the Government.

Ex: The president issued an ordinance declaring emergency in our state.

Ordinance = arms

Ex: The government wanted to close down the ordnance factory.


139. Persecute – Prosecute

Persecute = to harass or oppress

Ex: He persecuted his for not earning enough income.

Prosecute = to punish legally, pursue, continue

Ex: He was prosecuted on a charge of murder.

I prosecuted my studies inspite of adverse circumstances.


140. Pair – pare

Pair = two things

Ex: I want a pair of shoes.

Pare = to trim, to part

Ex: I like paring my nails.


141. Plane – plain

Plane = level

Ex: She has a high plane of thinking.

Plain = simple, easy

Ex: I prefer plain language for my expression.


142. Rein – Reign

Rein = bridle of a horse, to control a horse

Ex: He controlled the reins of the horse very skillfully. 

Reign = rule

Ex: People lived in fear during Jaja's reign.


143. Rest – Wrest

Rest = peace, respite

Ex: I want a few days rest.

Wrest = snatch something by force

Ex: He wrested his wife of all her salary.


144. Role – Roll

Role = part

Ex: Banks play a vital role in the economic development of the country.

Roll = to run over

Ex: She rolled over the bed and fell asleep.


145.  Spacious – Specious

Spacious = having enough room, roomy

Ex: We have spacious rooms in our house.

Specious = outwardly pleasing and attractive.

Ex: Her specious words impressed all of us.


146. Straight – Strait

Straight = opposed to curves

Ex: I drew a straight line on the paper.

Strait = narrow

Ex: The room is very strait in shape.


147. Story – Storey

Story = a tale

Ex: Ama is an expert in writing short stories.

Storey = the floor of a building.

Ex: She lives on the first storey.


148. Suit – Suite

Suit = a set of clothes, a legal action in a court

Ex: I like his grey coloured suit.

We lodged a suit in the court against him.

Suite = a retinue, a set of rooms

Ex: King Lear is followed by a suite of attendants.

A suite of servants were employed to look after my father. 

We reserved a suite in the hotel.


149. Tenor – Tenure

Tenor = purpose, drift

Ex: I do not understand the tenor of his statement.

Tenure = period 

Ex: The tenure of the president is four years.
